54th Bassmaster Classic kicks off in Grove and draws thousands
GROVE, Okla. — Another year where the “Super Bowl” of fishing is on Grand Lake.
The 54th Bassmaster Classic began, Friday morning. Fifty-six anglers hit the water bright and early around Wolf Creek Park. And with them — at least from a spectator standpoint — thousands of people — many from other states and countries.

Ones who are also making the drive to Tulsa for daily weigh-ins — then coming back Grove to watch the action. And that’s good news for the local economies.
“You know, I was talkin’ to the Bass guys today and they think this may be the largest crowd they’ve ever had on a Friday. So this area is, is big fishing, I mean we love to fish. You know, we love, that’s, that’s who we are. We’re the outdoors. Great for the whole area. You know, it really is. So, I know we’ve got hotel rooms in Joplin, everywhere else, packed out for this event. So, it’s an, it’s a, it’s an economic driver for this whole area,” said Brent Malone, Grove Convention & Tourism Director.
The tournament runs through Sunday. Top prize — $300,000.
