LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — State Senator John McGuire campaigned up and down the 5th District Monday ahead of primary elections Tuesday.

He stopped in Lynchburg to speak with voters and media at Charley’s Restaurant. It was WFXR’s first time hearing from the candidate during his race against incumbent Rep. Bob Good; he refused previous requests for an interview.

McGuire arrived at the event on Trump’s bus, a nod to his endorsement from the former president and presumptive Republican candidate in May. Good lost the former president’s support after he endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis early in the presidential race. WFXR reached out to Good’s campaign to talk Monday but they did not provide availability.

Both McGuire and some of his supporters attribute a change in the primary race to Trump’s endorsement.

“Oh, it was gigantic,” said McGuire. “This is a 77, 80% Trump district,” he said.

“By all means I sort of changed my mind, my thinking about things,” said McGuire supporter Susan Godsey.

However, McGuire hasn’t gotten the support of the 5th District Republican Committee which is backing Good. McGuire says that’s the challenge of facing an incumbent.

“He put people in place that support him,” he said.

Yet even at McGuire’s event, Good supporters say they’re not changing their minds.

“Bob’s been a good representative for this district,” said Bob Morrison who plans to vote for Good. “I admire his honesty, his forthrightness.”

Both Good and McGuire will be in Lynchburg Tuesday night waiting for the primary results.
