72-year-old man arrested in LA Fitness stabbing in Miami-Dade, police say

A 72-year-old man was arrested Thursday following a stabbing at an LA Fitness in Southwest Miami-Dade.

Miami-Dade Police responded to the gym, 14100 SW Eighth St., just after 8 a.m. Thursday after receiving reports of a fight in the men’s locker room.

At approximately 8:07 a.m., LA Fitness employees found a naked man, later identified as the victim, bleeding and restraining Stephen Bussert, who had stabbed him in the stomach, police said.

The employees quickly removed the knife and called 911.

According to the arrest report, witnesses reported hearing a verbal altercation over a chair that escalated into a physical struggle.

The victim, after showering, was approached aggressively by Bussert, the report said. He warned Bussert he would defend himself before Bussert began striking him and stabbing him in the abdomen, according to the police report. Police did not say how Bussert obtained the knife.

Despite his injury, the victim, whom police did not identify, restrained Bussert until police arrived. He was later admitted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he was treated in the ICU with a puncture wound to his lower left abdomen.

Bussert, after being treated at the same hospital, confessed to the altercation, police said.
