98 degrees at Silver Spring high-rise fire; apartment building evacuated

MONGTOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Crews helped evacuate an apartment building Friday afternoon after a trash compactor caught fire and filled the high-rise with smoke.

Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS), posted about the fire at Waterford Tower, located at 14000 Castle Blvd. in Silver Spring, at 4:30 p.m.

In the post on the X platform, Piringer noted that the fire was in the building’s lower level.

By 4:39 p.m., Piringer said that crews removed the trash compactor from the builiding and that the fire was out. He said that firefighters were clearing smoke from the building’s upper floors and that the temperature at the scene was 98 degrees.
