Additional charges added in Las Vegas animal abuse case

UPDATE: This article has been edited to clarify between charges based in Boulder City, and those faced in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Additional charges have been added in a Las Vegas animal abuse case, according to the Clark County District Attorney’s office.

In March, Boulder City police arrested Carolyn Luke, 72, and Timothy Miller, 79. They each face 16 animal cruelty charges, increased by two each from the original 14 listed in May.

In a news release, Steve Wolfson, Clark County District Attorney, said each charge represented a dead dog found in either the duo’s hotel room or their residence in March.

“These helpless dogs lived, and died, in deplorable conditions,” Wolfson said. “They were consistently deprived of their most basic needs — food, water, and medical attention — for a prolonged period which led to organ failure.”

According to the release, each felony count carries a maximum of four years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

8 News Now Investigators detailed the animal abuse and hoarding case, including the circumstances around the scene and the “smell of death” coming from the room in which the animals inhabited, documented in police reports.

“Our pets bring us so much joy,” Wolfson said. “They love us unconditionally. They want nothing in return. But they rely on us, their owners, for virtually all their needs. The death of each one of these animals was entirely avoidable, yet these defendants did nothing to care for these 16 dogs. They were severely unkempt, matted, and emaciated.”

Luke and Miller are set to appear in court in August and were ordered not to have any animals.
