Baton Rouge meteorologist shares experience of heat stroke, health expert offers safety tips

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — What seemed to be a normal day turned into a heat stroke for our Fox 44 and NBC Local 33 Chief Meteorologist, Sam Parish.

“I had been doing charity work in the morning…. was loading can goods into cars,” Parish.

“This was the first time I collapsed and had to be hospitalized,” Parish said.

On Thursday, June 13, Parish volunteered for community service work. He didn’t realize he was dehydrated until he passed out during a work staff meeting. Parish described his health scare as a near-death experience.

“It was very serious. I was at death’s door. As a meteorologist, it certainly heightened my awareness of how important it is for people to understand that heat can kill you,” Parish said.

Neil Manuel, a registered nurse and former paramedic, said there are heat stroke signs to be aware of.

“Heat stroke is the most severe related illness. It starts with maybe some confusion; your body core temperature can get to 104 or greater, but the biggest sign is you stop sweating,” Manuel said.

Manuel said it’s critical to stay hydrated. He says if someone is having an episode to follow these steps.

“Elevate the feet and put it on a on a pillow. Sometimes if they start getting nauseated and vomiting and stuff, you may want to lay them on their left side,” Manuel said.

Manuel also told BRProud that carrying an AED kit is the best way to see if someone needs CPR.

He said all workplaces should have an AED kit in case of an emergency. In the meantime, Parish said to stay hydrated in outdoor settings.

“If you’re going to be outside in these kind of conditions, you need to make sure you’re staying hydrated,” said Parish.
