Beware of Facebook scam targeting WAVY viewers entering the Waggin WAVY Wednesday contest

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – 10 On Your Side is warning Facebook users about a scam targeting WAVY viewers participating in the Waggin’ WAVY Wednesday contest.

Waggin’ WAVY Wednesday Contest

The scammer, coming from a user under the name “Selection Winner,” will send a reply on Facebook, asking the user to click on a link to register. Some WAVY 10 viewers have told us the link asks the user to click a trial button, where it will then charge your card.

Winners of the Waggin’ WAVY Wednesday contest will only be contacted via phone call, we will not send a message asking you to click on a link.

The FDIC released a list of ways to avoid scams, which can be found below:

  • Do not open emails from people you don’t know.

  • Be careful with links and new website addresses.

  • Secure you personal information.

  • Stay informed on the latest cyber threats.

  • Use strong passwords.

  • Keep your software up to date and maintain preventative software programs.

  • Update the operating systems on your electronic devices.

If you find yourself as a victim of a scam, you are urged to report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission here.
