Bicyclist hospitalized after colliding with SUV in Southington

A bicyclist was hit by an SUV in Southington late Thursday.

The victim was treated at an area hospital for apparent minor injuries following a crash reported around 9:15 p.m. near the Shoprite Plaza at 785 Queen St., according to the Southington Police Department.

Police officers, firefighters and medics responded to the area on a report of a car versus bike, police said.

According to police, an investigation found that a 37-year-old Waterbury resident was driving a 2005 Ford Explorer when she turned right out of the plaza to head south on Queen Street. As she entered the intersection, the Ford collided with a 21-year-old from Bristol who was headed north on the sidewalk and entered the intersection as well, police said.

Police said the bike collided with the Ford’s front right headlight. The bicyclist was conscious and alert prior to being taken to the hospital for what appeared to be minor injuries, according to police.

The crash remains under investigation.
