Bodies found in Tijuana River channel identified: SDPD

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The bodies of two men found in the Tijuana River channel back in February have been identified, according to a release Wednesday by the San Diego Police Department (SDPD).

Around 5:33 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21, SDPD officers received a call from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officials regarding a possible body floating in the water of the Tijuana River channel near the 3000 block of Dairy Mart Road in San Ysidro.

Officers responded that evening but due to poor lighting conditions, heavy water flow, and other factors, they were unable to find a body, according to an earlier SDPD release.

When they returned the following morning around 6:50 a.m., they were able to locate two male bodies near a large pile of debris in the river channel, officers said.

With help from CBP and the San Diego Fire Department River Rescue Team, officers were able to recover both bodies from the river.

After an examination, the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office discovered one of the men had trauma to his upper body, indicating he had been the victim of a homicide. That man has been identified as 36-year-old Rodolfo Agosto Castillo-Ancona of Mexico.

The second man had no obvious signs leading officials to believe he had been a victim of a crime. He was also identified but his name is not being released pending family notification and further medical examination.

Officials still do not know if the deaths of the two men were related. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who has information about this incident is encouraged to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
