A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy took his own life in South Miami-Dade, BSO says

A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy who works at the Broward County courthouse in Fort Lauderdale took his own life Tuesday morning on a desolate Homestead street near Homestead Miami Speedway, law enforcement sources told the Miami Herald.

BSO didn’t name the deputy, but said, he “has been employed at the Broward Sheriff’s Office for 16 years and was off duty at the time of his death.”

The agency also added, “If you are struggling, or know anyone who is suffering through their own battle with mental health, know that you are not alone, and there is help available.”

Farm workers found the deputy’s body around 6:30 a.m. in the area of Southwest 320th Street and 137th Avenue and called Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

WSVN-Channel 7’s helicopter showed more than 20 police cars from Miami-Dade and other agencies lined up along Southwest 320th Street near 130th Avenue, where a body lay next to a BSO cruiser.

Miami-Dade police is investigating the incident; the agency had not provided additional details as of Tuesday afternoon.
