Body of San Ramon man reported missing on motorcycle trip found in river

(KRON) — The body of William Robert Knight, a 73-year-old man from San Ramon, was recovered from a river Tuesday after he mysteriously disappeared over the weekend while returning home from a motorcycle trip to Idaho, according to authorities.

Knight was visiting Idaho on his white BMW motorcycle and had been in contact with his family, the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office said. The communication abruptly ended on May 30 after he told family he was in Lakeview, Oregon and was next headed to Graeagle, California. On the following morning, Knight’s cell phone pinged off an Alturas, Calif. tower, located in the state’s northeastern-most county of Modoc.

The family expected Knight to return to his San Ramon home on Saturday, June 1, the sheriff’s office said, but he never arrived. On Sunday, he was reported missing to the San Ramon Police Department.

Modoc County sheriff’s deputies began a search on Monday of the area where Knight’s cell phone last pinged off of the Alturas tower, authorities said. Knight remained missing and on Tuesday the search continued, with San Ramon police, the California Highway Patrol and family members assisting the sheriff’s office.

At around 6 p.m. Tuesday, a 9-1-1 caller reported that a body was located in a river 4 miles south of Alturas.

Responding authorities recovered the body and positively identified the remains as Knight’s, the sheriff’s office said. The motorcycle that Knight was riding was later located and retrieved from the river.

Knight’s family was notified of the discovery of his remains.

Modoc County Sheriff’s Office investigators are working to determine the cause and manner of death while CHP investigates the crash.
