They said a 2013 Toyota RAV4 was traveling north on Route 3 near the 40.2 mile marker when it hit the deer at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

The driver, a 63-year-old Roxbury man, stopped in the right lane to check the damage to the SUV, police said.

He and the passenger, Magdalena Desrosiers, 35, of Roxbury, got out of the RAV4 and and were on foot when a Jaguar SUV traveling in the right lane swerved into the breakdown lane to avoid hitting the Toyota, State Police said.

The Jaguar hit Desrosiers in the breakdown lane. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The center and right travel lanes of Route 3 were closed for nearly 3½ hours.
