A British man has died after being stabbed outside a nightclub in a Spanish beach resort town.

The 31-year-old was fatally attacked outside the Oxygen nightclub in Calella, around 30 miles (48km) north of Barcelona.

A second British man was also injured and taken to hospital, Spanish police have confirmed.

One man has been arrested and an investigation is ongoing.

In a statement, Mossos d'Esquadra - the police force for the Catalonia region - said they were called to reports of a fight close to the nightclub at around 4am on Friday morning.

Police found the 31-year-old with critical injuries and he died at the scene.

Spanish authorities are reviewing CCTV images from the area to identify others suspected of involvement.

A UK Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Calella is located on the Costa del Maresme, which is close to the Costa Brava. Both are popular with holidaymakers from the UK and elsewhere.
