Broward student critically injured after Tesla hit scooter near school, deputies say

A Cooper City High student was taken to the hospital in critical condition after a Tesla struck the teen riding a scooter outside the school Monday morning, Broward authorities said.

Just after 8 a.m., the driver of a Tesla hit him near Cooper City High School, 9401 Stirling Rd., the Broward Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

A police dispatcher told first responders the child was bleeding from the head and lying on the roadway.

The “child is not moving,” the dispatcher said.

A paramedic said the boy is 15 to 17 years old. Authorities have not identified him.

The teen was taken in critical condition to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Broward Sheriff Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane told the Miami Herald.

CBS News Miami’s helicopter crew reported seeing blood, a scooter and a red Tesla with damage to its windshield. The Tesla driver stayed near the crash site, the sheriff’s office said.

The injured teen is a student at the school, said Keyla Concepción, a spokeswoman with Broward County Public Schools.

The eastbound and westbound lanes of Stirling Road in Cooper City were shut down for a couple of hours between Palm Avenue and Southwest 90th Avenue, Broward Sheriff’s Office said.
