Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers bringing saltwater joys to Iceberg Alley
Is you 'appy? If you're a fan of Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers, then you probably will be on Saturday night.
The legendary Newfoundland act is getting the band back together at Iceberg Alley.
Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers have been making their audiences keel over from laughter with their own brand of humour for 40 years, stemming from their roots in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Their sketches and songs have been so successful, in fact, that the group itself is every bit a part of the province's culture they've been drawing their own inspiration from for decades.
Kevin Blackmore, or Buddy as he is known on stage, said one of the group's last performances was at the Arts and Culture Centre in November 2019.
The group had shows booked for 2020, but Blackmore said the pandemic forced them into a retirement — which, he says, wasn't a bad thing.
"We had intended to wind down, and we hadn't booked a heavy year in 2020. But the year we booked didn't happen at all," Blackmore said.
Since then, the group has toyed with the idea of performing again. They said yes to Iceberg Alley because they knew their music would reach a lot of people, and there was no pressure to tour.
"There is a little bit of delight in being able to just jump in the pool and take a quick dip and then get back out instead of doing the marathon," Blackmore said.
The group got a taste of performing again at the Music NL awards gala in October. From that moment, they knew there was still some more to go.
"When we walked on stage and did the monitor checks and everything in the afternoon, we realized, 'Oh, my God, I love this,'" Blackmore said.
The group is looking forward to bringing some saltwater joys to the Iceberg Alley performance tent.
"We're looking forward to it like little boys walking into a candy shop."
