California Highway Patrol adds eight new canine teams, brings state total to nearly 50

(FOX40.COM) — Two Belgian Malinois, two Dutch Shepherds, and four German Shepherds became official members of the California Highway Patrol on Friday.

During a graduation ceremony held at the CHP Academy grounds in West Sacramento, the eight dogs were added to the agency’s Patrol and Narcotics Detection teams (5), Patrol and Explosives Detection teams (2), and the Explosive Detection Canine team (1).

The ceremony marked the end of a monthslong period of intense training for the dogs and “the beginning of a valuable public safety partnership for the crime-fighting duos.”

CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said, “These canine teams are essential resources in our public safety mission.” He continued, “Their incomparable dedication, keen senses, and unwavering loyalty not only enhance our capabilities but also strengthen the bond between law enforcement and the communities we serve throughout California.”

The California Highway Patrol said it uses its canine teams to perform a variety of tasks, including detecting human scent, contraband, and explosives. The dogs can also be tasked with assisting law enforcement agencies in apprehending criminals and locating at-risk missing persons.

CHP adds that a canine team can improve the safety and effectiveness of officers while on duty and the number of canine teams across California now stands at 49.
