Celebrate the graduation of Lansing refugees, immigrants

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Mid-Michigan residents know Lansing as a globally diverse community, and adult newcomers from other parts of the world are an important part of that.

This Friday evening at 6:30, at least six adult immigrants and refugees will celebrate their high school graduation, marking 100 graduates since the 2010 start of The Global Institute of Lansing.

They are from many countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Honduras, Iraq, Laos and Myanmar. “GIL believes newcomers are invaluable members of the community and, as such, deserve an accessible, quality education,” said GIL organizers.

The Global Institute of Lansing is a nonprofit that works to help adult refugees and immigrants with getting a high school diploma after they’ve settled in greater Lansing.

The GIL Class of 2024 Graduation Ceremony is free to attend, and people are invited for the free dessert reception afterward.

GIL aims “to provide adult newcomers settled in the Greater Lansing area educational assistance and the means to attain a high school diploma in an atmosphere of peace, respect, encouragement and inspiration.”

The 2024 Graduation Ceremony and Reception starts at 6:30 at First Presbyterian Church, 510 West Ottawa Street in Lansing.
