Central IL Law Enforcement participates in torch run to support Special Olympics
FISHER, Ill. (WCIA) – Police sirens were blaring Thursday morning, marking the start of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a national fundraising event to grow awareness of the Special Olympics.
Local police from Parkland, Rantoul, Champaign, and other Central Illinois departments ran more than 30 miles from Fisher to Champaign.
“I can’t stress enough how dedicated these officers are,” said Champaign County Corrections Officer Micah McMahon.
Officers carried what’s called the “Flame of Hope” high as they made their way down. It’s all aimed at spotlighting Special Olympics, with “Together We Can” as this year’s theme.
“We are the largest run in the entire state of Illinois which is something we are proud of here in Champaign County,” McMahon added.

Emmerson Hjort, a representative for Special Olympics, says these events, although tiring, are a way to inspire more athletes.
“We just love it, it keeps us going keeps us moving we help each other out we have each other we have fun, a family in the torch run that’s why we’re so involved,” Hjort added.
Officers say serving your community is at the core of being a first responder, and participating in events like these helps represent their dedication to every member.
“I mean it gives an opportunity for kids who may not have these opportunities growing up or maybe not have the means to do it and so by helping support them funding-wise — raising awareness, these kids get a chance to go out and accomplish these huge goals that they set for them,” said Champaign County Detective Travis Wilson.
Tomorrow morning will mark the start of the Special Olympics Summer Games, with Artistic Gymnastics starting at 10:30 a.m.
