Charli XCX and Lorde address past feud in Girl, So Confusing remix: 'I was trapped'

Lorde has teamed up British pop star Charli XCX to release a remix of Girl, So Confusing as they address their fallout.

Charli's Brat diss track originally focused on a complex relationship with another female artist.

Following its release, speculation swirled online suggesting the song could be referencing Lorde, particularly interpreting lyrics like "[I] think you should come to my party and put your hands up" as a subtle nod to Lorde's own lyrics in Team, where she reflects on being told to "throw my hands up in the air."

Having emerged in the industry around the same time, the pair were frequently been compared to each other and have even been mistaken for one another in interviews.

In the remix, Charli XCX and Lorde address the fallout and take turns sharing verses about their insecurities and how these affected their relationship.

New Zealand native Lorde reveals being "speechless" waking up to a heartfelt voicemail from Charli, where she expressed her feelings about their connection.

The Kiwi star sings: "You always say, 'let's go out,' but then I cancel last minute. I was so lost in my head and scared to be in the pictures, because for the last couple years I've been avoiding my body. I tried to starve myself thinner, then I gained all the weight back.

"I was trapped in a hatred and your life seemed so awesome. I never thought for a second my voice was in your head."

Later, Lorde acknowledges Charli's sentiments as she revises a verse from the original song, reflecting Charli's belief that collaborating on music would make the internet go crazy".

Prior to Lorde's addition to the remix, listeners speculated that the subject of track was likely the Royals singer, especially when Charli mentioned their similar hair in the song.

In May, Charli discussed how she was “super jealous” of the Kiwi artist’s success when her 2014 hit Royals came out.

While recounting a 2014 incident when a presenter host mistook her for Lorde, she told Rolling Stone: “When Royals came out, I was super jealous of the success that that song got, and that [Lorde] got.

“You piece all this stuff together in your brain, like, ‘She was into my music. She had big hair; I had big hair. She wore black lipstick; I once wore black lipstick.’ You create these parallels and think, ‘Well, that could have been me.’ But it couldn’t have because we’re completely different people.

“I wasn’t making music that sounded anything like Royals. I think you just read what you want into it because you’re feeling insecure about your own work..”
