ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WKRG) — The docks are getting busy and the boats are ready for one of the most popular fishing seasons on the Gulf Coast: red snapper season for charter boats.

“The energy has been building for sure.” Captain Josh Lesley is one of the lucky ones, “Definitely getting excited, getting ready.” He gets to go fishing for a living.

“We pretty much make 75 percent of our income in the next three months,” said the Captain of Getaway Charters.

Red snapper season for charter boats begins Saturday, June 1, and will run until the end of the day on August 27.

“The season so far has been really slow,” said Lesley. “This spring we didn’t see as many people fishing with us due to the weather and the economy.”

But already there are signs that a fish could change all that.

“Our pre-bookings have been up so far compared to last year,” said Operations Manager for Zeke’s Marina, Jordan Wright. “It’s looking good for the upcoming summer season.”

Orange Beach is called the red snapper capital of the world. “When you come down here at noon in the middle of June, middle of July you definitely see why it is the red snapper capital of the world with all the red snapper that hits the docks,” said Wright.

Josh Lesley will be doing his part, seven days a week over the next three months when he will be fishing for and catching red snapper.
