Cherry blossom trees are about to be in full bloom!

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Cherry blossom trees are blooming all over Middle Tennessee, specifically in downtown Nashville. The trees are at about 15% bloom but the plants in the city are blooming faster because of the microclimate.

In the city, the temperatures rise faster and highs get warmer than out in the country. So, these plants are blooming more rapidly. By next week, most cherry blossom trees will be in full bloom.

According to Austin Lohin, a horticulturist at Bate’s Nursery, the two most common types of Cherry Blossom trees in Tennessee are Yoshino and Okame. Both trees have white and pink blooms.

There are two types of cherry trees—flowering and fruiting. Flowering cherry trees are more common across the mid-state. Both types have beautiful flowers, but fruit trees produce cherries you can eat.

Lohin said Bates Nursery has all types of cherry blossom trees in stock, but fruiting cherry trees do better where winters get colder.

If you decide to plant a cherry blossom tree this year, it’s not too late to see blooms this spring. Lohin advised, when planting the tree make sure it is firmly in the ground—you don’t have to be gentle. Make sure to mix the dirt that’s already in your yard with fertilizer and soak the tree with water.

You may use more water than you think is necessary, but the first watering of the tree is the key to success.
