Chester Township Fire Rescue to launch community CPR training

Mar. 12—Chester Township Fire Rescue recently announced the launch of its community CPR training.

This training is intended to provide citizens with the knowledge needed to save the lives of others. The course is taught using American Heart Association curriculum and upon completion, citizens will have the confidence to respond effectively to those suffering from cardiac events, according to a news release.

The first class is scheduled for March 19 at the fire station, 8552 Parkside Drive. The class is from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and can hold 15 participants.

Residents can call the fire station at 440-729-9951 to register. Payment of $26 must be received to guarantee a seat in the class.

Participants will learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques for both adults and infants. The course also includes training on the proper use of Automatic External Defibrillators, located in many public and some private buildings.

The new American Heart Association training involves a hands-only method. No longer are bystanders expected to provide rescue breathing without proper equipment. Hands-only CPR may reduce the time of starting CPR and result in delivery of a greater number of chest compressions with few interruptions for the first several minutes of a cardiac arrest, the release stated.

"The fire department strives to make Chester Township a safe community to live and raise your family," Fire Chief William Shaw stated in the release. "This initiative will improve the safety of those who live, work, and play in our community. Chester Township residents have always been very generous with their time and skills to help their neighbors.

"This will be another tool in their toolbox so they can make a significant difference in someone's life."
