When will cicadas leave Tennessee?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Cicadas have been invading Tennessee and Kentucky with their song getting louder by the day. When will it stop?

Karla Addesso, Research Associate Professor of Entomology at TSU, said the first peak is happening now.

This is when the bugs are swarming and the loudest. The males have come out of the ground so the “waking up” period is ending. The males are looking for a mate with their song.

According to Addesso, you are more likely to be swarmed on a lawnmower because the vibrations and sounds are a signal to the females just like when the males are chorusing.

The males usually die after mating and the females start “flagging”. That is when the mother cicadas slice little slits into tree branches to lay eggs.

You may start to notice brown tips of young tree branches, and that’s from the cicadas slicing the branches.

The loud noise will start dying down and cicadas will return to the ground by late June.
