City opens community center for residents in Evansville to escape the heat

EVANSVILLE — With temperatures set to reach high into the 90s this week, Mayor Stephanie Terry's office has announced a city-provided cooling center.

The public will be welcome at the C.K. Newsome Community Center, located at 100 E. Walnut St. to cool off.

This program will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Monday through Friday. The American Red Cross will be providing water and cooling supplies, according to the mayor's office.

"Additionally, members of the community can cool down inside any of the Evansville-Vanderburgh Public Library locations during their regular operating hours," the news release states. "Each location has access to water fountains and bottle filling stations."

According to the National Weather Services, highs will stay in the 90s all week. Friday has the highest temperature, with the NWS forecasting 97 degrees.

Lows will not drop below 72 degrees, according to the week's forecast.
