College professor visiting Florida for conference found dead

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A college professor who was visiting Florida for a conference was found dead Saturday after he was considered missing on Friday, according to a statement from the university where he worked.

Dr. David Hanbury, a professor at Averett University in Virginia, was attending the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference in Orlando, according to the university.

“On behalf of the entire Averett University community, we send our affection, condolences and prayers of support to Dr. Hanbury’s family, friends and all overs upon whom he had a lasting impact,” the statement reads.

Hanbury was found dead Saturday at Club Orlando, according to the Orlando Police Department. The cause of death is under investigation but “does not appear to be suspicious.”

Hanbury had been a part of the staff for more than eight years and was an associate professor and co-chair of the Psychology Department. He also served as the chair for the Division of Physical and Psychological Health Sciences, according to the university.

Averett University is a private university located in Danville, Virginia, just north of the North Carolina state line. It’s about 40 miles northeast of Greensboro, North Carolina, and about 50 miles southeast of Roanoke.
