Columbus locals utilize historical cemetery for Juneteenth photography session

HARRIS COUNTY, Ga ( WRBL) — At the Pierce Chapel African Cemetery, a historical photography session was held to capture the spirit of Juneteenth.

The cemetery is located in Harris County and is a pre emancipation burial site of enslaved Africans and their descendants. The cemetery was established in 1827 and is as old as the county.   In the cemetery, pink flags have been placed by archeologists identifying burial sites.

Yamona Pierce, the President and Founder of Hamilton Hood Foundation says the historical photography session intends to capture the history and to tell the story of African American ancestors.

Pierce says, “When they transitioned. It didn’t mean or doesn’t mean that their stories transitioned. Those stories, their dreams, their hopes are very much alive today.”

She says, “It represents the stories and historical journeys of this lesser known community and lesser known history. “

Residents of the community and veterans dressed in historical costumes and posed for pictures that were taken by local photographers and a vintage century camera.
