Community gathers in Hagerstown for series of Juneteenth observances

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — Wheaton Park was the site of a Juneteenth observance to kick off the week.

The community gathering was just one in a series of events here. The weekend started with a “Cotton Club”-themed masquerade ball marking the 50th anniversary of the Doleman Black Heritage Museum in town.

“We were already planning to celebrate in 2021 without the occasion being a federal law, a national holiday. So this is just perfect timing,” said Alesia Parsons McBean with the museum.

Festival organizer Marcia Saunders said, “We’re celebrating Juneteenth, and it’s about rising up together.”

Among the sponsors of the Wheaton Park gathering were the Washington County Health Department and Meritus Health.
