Community reiterates opposition to Fort Mill solar plant proposal

FORT MILL, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Community members are reiterating opposition to a proposal for a solar plant manufacturing proposal in Fort Mill.

City Council met Monday night one month after the county board of zoning appeals unanimously voted to reverse putting the Silfab Solar manufacturing plant under a light industrial zone off Highway 21. Members of the board cited a lack of clarity in the county code.

Neighbors have expressed their concern about toxic chemicals from the plant used during the manufacturing process getting into the nearby environment.

“Silfab lied to this council,” one community member said while speaking in front of council members Monday night. “They misrepresented what they are going to do at this factory. It’s okay for council to change their minds if you were misled by a lie. Every single one of you was.”

In anticipation of the meeting, Silfab released the following statement Monday afternoon.

The safety and well-being of both our community and employees are paramount to Silfab Solar, and we’re committed to being a respectful neighbor. We understand that the community has concerns regarding our operations and can assure York County that we have taken extraordinary steps to reduce any risk to neighbors, going above and beyond what local and federal regulations require. We look forward to continuing to provide the facts to the community and welcome any opportunity to correct the misinformation that has been spread about our project.
