Corbin takes steps to further annexation into Laurel County

Jun. 21—CORBIN — The city of Corbin is poised for another potential expansion of its boundaries, building on the previous annexation of Laurel County territory.

The initial annexation of a portion of Laurel County into Corbin city limits was a significant milestone in the city's history. This expansion included the current city boundary line up I-75 to exit 29 and then Cumberland Gap Parkway (US 25E) from the KY 770 bridge all the way to its intersection with US 25W, which the current city limits goes to.

During city commission meeting on Monday, Mayor Suzie Razmus signed a letter of intent to include the Laurel River Bridge area, near 312 Bridge Park towards Keavy.

The initial expansion into Laurel County allowed Corbin to extend its public services, infrastructure, and municipal benefits to residents and businesses in the area. The annexation aimed to foster economic growth, enhance public safety, and improve the overall quality of life for the community.

The latest proposal involves adding parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest into city limits.

Mayor Razmus explained that they will only be able to annex the Laurel River Bridge if much needed repairs and forestry work is completed, as a condition of the city taking over management of the facilities. This includes repairing bathrooms, restoring the electric service, replacing or repairing lift stations, and repaving the parking lot.

The potential new annexation aligns with Corbin's long-term growth strategy, which aims to expand the city's rich while maintaining a high standard of living for its residents.
