Coroner: Johnstown teen dies after incident at hotel pool Sunday

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – A Johnstown teen has died, two days after being pulled from a hotel swimming pool, investigators said.

Tahjmir Seeney, 18, was at the Holiday Inn Johnstown- Downtown Sunday with relatives who traveled from out of town to celebrate his graduation from Greater Johnstown High School, Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees said.

The family was swimming together when a relative noticed Seeney descended to the bottom of the pool, Lees said.

He said the tragic incident occurred just before noon Sunday.

A bystander performed CPR before firefighters stepped in and took over, and Seeney was taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, but succumbed at 10:49 a.m. Tuesday, Lees said.

Greater Johnstown School District Superintendent Amy Arcurio said the entire district was heartbroken Tuesday.

She described Seeney as a great young man with a bright future ahead of him. He completed his coursework and training in the school’s welding program and already had a job lined up.

“He was loved by so many,” Arcurio said. “His family is in our hearts and prayers as we give them as much support as we possibly can today ... in this tragic time.”

Seeney’s cause and manner of death have not yet been determined, but Lees said the fatality is not considered suspicious.

An autopsy is planned for later this week, Lees said.

He said Seeney’s family was still finalizing funeral arrangements Tuesday.
