CSP helps capture escaped inmate using infrared technology

DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado State Patrol used infrared technology to help locate an inmate who escaped from the Fremont County Jail in early June.

Kegan VanVliet, 45, was described by CSP as a homicide suspect who escaped on June 7 after attempting to shoot his spouse.

According to CSP, its Aircraft Unit went to El Paso County to support troopers on the ground, local law enforcement and U.S. Marshalls, who were staged in the area of Interstate 25 and East Woodman Road in Colorado Springs.

Because the crew arrived in the dark, infrared technology was used to search the area. VanVliet’s vehicle had been discovered abandoned in a parking lot, meaning he was likely on foot, CSP said.

After a search, troopers in the aircraft were able to locate VanVliet as he walked away from a location that a citizen had tipped law enforcement off about.

The troopers in the air tracked him and directed law enforcement where he was hiding. He was then taken into custody without any further incident.

CSP captured the moment when law enforcement on the ground apprehended him.
