DC police identify woman in carjacked SUV who died after crash

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) released the name of a woman who died in a carjaced SUV on Monday.

MPD said Tuesday that Leslie Marie Gaines, 55, of Northeast was in the SUV at MedStar Washington Medical Center when her daughter got out of the SUV to get a wheelchair for Gaines.

Police said Kayla Kenisha Brown, 22, who was at the hospital, got into the SUV and drove away with Gaines.

MPD said around 1:30 p.m., Brown was driving in the 400 block of 6th St. NW when she tried to to turn onto D Street NW and hit a building, located at 601 D St. NW. Officers said Brown got out of the SUV and tried to leave, but a police captain stopped her.

Medics took Gaines to the hospital where she died.

The Metropolitan Police Department said Brown, who was scheduled for a court appearance Tuesday afternoon, faces charges of Felony Murder, Kidnapping, and Carjacking.
