DCPS appoints Smith as new district performing arts coordinator

Daviess County Public Schools has appointed Jason Smith, a music educator and band director at Daviess County Middle School, as the district's new performing arts coordinator.

Smith has been with the district since 2016. As performing arts coordinator, Smith will be in charge of making sure arts programs at the schools have what they need, that all students can participate in fine arts and performing arts programs, and evaluating arts programs.

Smith said a goal will be identifying obstacles that prevent students from participating in arts programs, or force them to drop out.

Smith said he originally went to college with the idea of pursuing a career in the medical field, but later realized he wanted to teach music.

"I decided I didn't want to be stuck in an office all day. I wanted to help kids," Smith said. "I realized that's what my real passion was."
