I-485 Outer remains closed for cleanup after 1 killed, 1 airlifted in NE Charlotte crash

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – One person has died and another person has been airlifted to the hospital following a major wreck involving multiple tractor-trailers on I-485 in northeast Charlotte Friday morning. Rush hour traffic was brought to a halt in the area.

The deadly crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. on I-485 by the Benfield Road and Mallard Creek Road exit. Charlotte Fire said both lanes on the inner and outer loops were blocked.

Two tractor-trailers and at least three cars could be seen with damage at the scene. The exact circumstances surrounding the wreck have not yet been released.

Charlotte Fire, Medic, a mass casualty bus, and NC State Highway Patrol were among the departments that responded to the crash scene Friday morning.

Four others involved in the multi-vehicle wreck were evaluated at the scene and refused transport to the hospital, according to Medic.

According to NCDOT, I-485 Outer Loop near Mallard Creek Road remains shut down Friday afternoon as maintenance crews clean up the area following the wreck.

The interstate is expected to remain closed until at least 2:30 p.m. Friday.
