SUMTERVILLE — According to census data, more than 5.4% of Sumter County's residents have gone without health insurance coverage.

A generous donation to the United Way Lake Sumter Counties should help the children of that estimated 7,009 residents who've endured without health care options. With the donation, the nonprofit will work toward extending its reach deeper in areas of need in the county.

Representatives of Suncoast Credit Union Foundation presented a check for $50,000 to the UWLS on June 18 at Langley Health Services in Sumterville.

The funds will be used to expand UWLS’ Together for Health and Wellness program’s youth health initiative into Sumter County through Langley, a partner agency of the UWLS, United Way said in a press release.

Most of the funds will be used to cover the healthcare expenses of underinsured children (first–12th grade) at Langley. This includes expenses related to medical, mental health, dental, vision, prescriptions, etc. It can go toward copays, deductibles and other uncovered expenses.

The remainder will be used for a health fair during a Back to School Bash in Sumter County and to help cover administrative costs, the press release added.

Each time a Suncoast member uses their debit or credit card, the credit union donates 2 cents to its foundation to fund local initiatives. Since forming in 1990, the foundation has raised and donated more than $44 million.
