Drugs, drone headed for Tennessee prison seized during traffic stop

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A large amount of drugs and a drone, believed to be on their way into a Lake County correctional facility, were seized by the West Tennessee Drug Task Force during a traffic stop Thursday.

According to reports, a Bells Police Officer conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle heading westbound on Highway 412.

During the traffic stop, officials say the passenger fled the vehicle with a backpack. The driver was detained by the patrolman.

Agents with the West Tennessee Drug Task Force assisted with searching the vehicle and locating the second suspect.

A search of the car revealed 48 “Dirty 30” fentanyl pills, 3 1/2 pounds of tobacco, multiple cell phones with chargers, a Nintendo Switch, memory cards, mesh bags, and a drone with a controller and spare batteries.

Agents were able to recover the suspect’s backpack, which contained around one pound of marijuana.

Reports say that further investigation revealed that the suspects were headed to Northwest Correctional Facility in Lake County. Agents claim the drone would have been used to drop mesh bags filled with contraband inside prison grounds.

One person was arrested on charges of Possession of Schedule VI with intent and Drug Paraphernalia.

The WTDTF says more charges are expected in the future.
