From the editor: Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reporters receive honors for their work

I’ve only been the editor in Columbus for a few months, but I’ve quickly seen just what great work the journalists on the Ledger-Enquirer’s team are doing.

I’m thrilled to tell our readers that the Georgia Press Association has seen it too: Three Ledger-Enquirer reporters took home honors at the organization’s awards ceremony earlier this month.

Our breaking news reporter, Kelby Hutchison, won the Emerging Young Journalist Award. The award is given to a top reporter each year who is under 30 and has fewer than five years of experience professionally.

Kelby also placed third in our newspaper division for breaking news coverage.

The amount of important journalism Kelby is doing has only increased since the window for this award closed. This year, he has given readers crucial information through good reporting on a murder-suicide at Columbus State University and has helped readers know more about the beloved Columbus prosecutor, Stacey Jackson, who died in May.

Kelby wasn’t the only one on our staff awarded for good work. Mark Rice, a longtime Ledger-Enquirer reporter who has covered just about every topic you can imagine, placed second in our division for feature writing.

Business and engagement reporter Brittany McGee also received honors, placing third for business writing.

You can read the work of all three reporters on our website at ledger-enquirer.com.

I’m really proud of what Kelby, Mark and Brittany do for our readers every day. I hope you’re seeing their work on a regular basis. If you aren’t already subscribing, I hope you’ll consider doing so to get more access to the local coverage they provide.
