Fallen soldiers honored at Memorial Day ceremony at The Lakes

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Dozens of people attended a special ceremony Monday at The Lakes to honor and pay tribute to America’s fallen soldiers.

Pranava Moody is the past post commander for American Legion 76. She said it’s a privilege to serve as the master speaker this year.

“Sometimes it feels like those who died get forgotten and for us to be able to have this event and share it with the community in a really intimate setting is really nice,” explained Moody. “When I was on active duty serving in the Air Force, I did mortuary affairs. I took care of all our fallen brothers and sisters and brought them home on their last journey home to their families so this day is always a special day for me.”

Moody says it’s refreshing to see so many new faces as they roll out the event with a Presentation of Colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, a Wreath of Remembrance, and the invited speakers.

“We even have someone dressed as a Revolutionary War veteran, we have a WWII veteran, so we have members from all eras representing that and I think it’s also really special that we involve younger members of our community,” added Moody. “We have a couple of ROTC units that come and participate and scouting units that participate in this, so it really does become not just the veterans highlighting what they’ve done but the community coming to support what they’ve done but also the future of the armed services.”

One of those speakers included the current post commander of American Legion 76, Joel Forman, who shared the meaning of this day.

“It’s a way we can celebrate those veterans and soldiers, airman who have died in the name of freedom. There’s nothing else in this area, in this part of the valley that’s going on today that we know of. This is our 21st year of doing it and it’s the highlight of my year, our year.”

Forman said every day veterans do their best to remember their comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice. He asked others to do the same.

“Just support us in any way you can,” Forman said.
