Family of victim in random Holland shooting face accused killer in court

HOLLAND — The family of shooting victim Miguel Zamudio, 41, of Holland, faced his alleged killer in court during a preliminary examination on Thursday.

The victim’s wife, Katrina, and other witnesses testified about what they saw Saturday, April 13, on W. 19th Street.

According to a report from MLive, Katrina testified Jerrell Alexander Lindsey approached the couple and their 14-year-old son in the driveway of Miguel’s parents' home and told them to get rid of their dog. Miguel told his son to take the dog inside.

Katrina said when Miguel turned to go inside, Lindsey shot him in the head.

Medical treatment was provided on-scene and Zamudio was taken to Holland Hospital. He was later transferred to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he died from his injuries Sunday.

Officers located Lindsey inside an adjacent home. He was taken into custody, then made claims of a bomb and other explosives in the residence from which he exited. ATF technicians checked the house and found no explosives. It was later determined Lindsey did not reside at or have any connection to the home he'd entered.

Other witnesses included Holland police officer Rob Borowski, Lindsey’s significant other Rita Freeman, a next-door neighbor who was in the Zamudio home, and the neighbor’s brother, who was in the home next door.

Holland District Judge Bradley Knoll sent the case to Ottawa County Circuit Court, where Lindsey will be tried for one charge of open murder, three charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, and two felony firearm charges.

Lindsey, 19, was arrested April 15 and is being held without bond. According to court records, Lindsey first invoked his right to self-representation at arraignment, and was later appointed a public defender. Lindsey has pled not guilty.
