FAMU-FSU college of engineering ranks in top 100 in U.S. News & World Report rankings
Florida State and Florida A&M Universities’ College of Engineering — the only joint school of its kind in the nation — was ranked No. 93 in the 2024 U.S. News & World Report “Best Engineering Schools” rankings, released Tuesday.
The placement comes during FAMU and FSU’s efforts to have the engineering school become one of the top 50 engineering colleges in the country within the next five years.
While the No. 93 ranking keeps the college among the nation’s top 100 engineering schools as ranked by the U.S. News & World Report, it brings the school's placement down a notch from No. 92 last year.

The national report ranks engineering schools across the country as part of its annual edition of “Best Graduate Schools." The joint school came in 98th place in 2022, which marked the first time it ranked in the Top 100 for engineering graduate degrees.
This year, the FAMU-FSU college is tied with five other schools — including Florida International University’s College of Engineering and Computing, which also dropped by one placement in the rankings compared to last year, and the University of South Florida’s College of Engineering, which plunged from 85th place in the 2023 rankings.
Despite the slight drop in this year’s rankings, FAMU and FSU still aim to elevate the engineering school to make it a part of the Top 50 club — an achievement that would also make FAMU the first HBCU (historically Black college or university) engineering college to achieve the distinction, according to a FAMU report.
An inaugural 2024-2029 strategic plan “Engineering Our Future” was developed to lay out five strategic priorities to focus on in the next five years, which include goals related to student success, research and graduate education, visibility, operational support and fostering a culture that "celebrates our unique engineering community," according to the College of Engineering's strategic planning report.
In the 2024 legislative session, the engineering college requested a $13 million operating budget increase from last year’s $21 million budget to go toward its plans of propelling to new heights.
Although the request was rejected, $21.2 million was approved in this year’s legislative budget on behalf of the joint school.
According to the U.S. News & World Report, the top five ranked engineering schools across the nation are:
No. 1: Massachusetts Institute of Technology
No. 2: Stanford University
No. 3: University of California Berkeley
No. 4: California Institute of Technology
No. 4: Georgia Institute of Technology

No. 73: University of Central Florida (no change)
No. 93: Florida A&M University - Florida State University (down from 92)

No. 130: Florida Atlantic University (up from 138)
No. 130: University of Miami (up from 138)
No. 164: Florida Institute of Technology (down from 161)
