Fire engine named after ‘Safe Haven’ baby who graduated high school

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A teen surrendered under Florida’s “Safe Haven” law has crossed a major life milestone: graduating high school.

On June 15, the Lake County Fire Rescue shared on Facebook that Colleen was surrendered at Station 112 in Clermont 18 years ago.

Now, not only has she graduated, but she was honored by Station 112 who named a fire engine after her.

“Join us in congratulating Colleen on her huge accomplishment,” Lake County Fire Rescue said in the post. “We are so proud of you!”

Florida recently expanded its “Safe Haven” laws, allowing new parents the ability to surrender unwanted infants up to 30 days after birth.

When Colleen was surrendered in 2006, Florida law only allowed infants to be surrendered within three days of birth.

As of May 2024, 457 infants had been surrendered after the law was enacted in 2000.
