Four people have been arrested after a man was hospitalised following an incident which is believed to have included a weapon being fired.

The four, who North Yorkshire Police described as a man in his 20s and three people aged in their 40s, were detained earlier on Tuesday on suspicion of firearms and public order offences.

Officers were called to Wreyfield Drive in Scarborough at 23:35 BST on Saturday to reports of an assault and believe a firearm was discharged around the same time.

The victim was treated for minor injuries, the force said.

Det Ch Insp Gemma Tate said extra officers had been deployed to the area.

"We have made significant inquiries into this incident, and this has led to five arrests," she said.

A 20-year-old man initially arrested in connection with the incident has since been released on bail.

The four arrested earlier on Tuesday remained in custody, a force spokesperson said.

Police also asked for the public's help with their investigations into an incident that occurred earlier that evening, near to the row of shops on Colescliffe Road.

It was reported that an "argument and disturbance" took place at around 22:00 BST.
