Firework tent regulations in southwest Missouri

JOPLIN, Mo. — We’re two weeks away from the Fourth of July, and you’ve probably seen tents around town set up to sell fireworks. But have you ever wondered what goes into running one of them?

A symbol of celebration that’s about to be sold in tents on nearly every street corner here in southwest Missouri. So, we caught up with Joplin Fire Marshal, Dale Brooks, about what goes into running one of them.

“I guess anybody could do it, but you still have a process to go through — and we take those applications, go out to look at the sites, make sure the site would be applicable to meet the adopted codes,” said Dale Brooks, Joplin Fire Marshal.

It turns out locals had until June 1 to register for an operational permit and a tent permit, which each cost around $100 to obtain, and are absolutely necessary to operate a legal firework stand. Stand-runners must also be able to provide proof of bond or liability insurance for customers.

“I think we currently have 14 sites that want to sell fireworks — so we will be looking at those Sunday, the 30th, and try to have them ready to go and they can start selling at midnight of the 30th if they want,” said Brooks.

Brooks also wants to remind locals what products are and are not allowed.

“No pop-bottle rockets — and um, none of the lanterns are allowed in city limits,” said Brooks.

Fireworks are able to be sold as of July 1 in the Joplin area.
