Florida Man Caught on Camera Throwing Large Items Off High Rise in NYC

An NYPD spokesperson tells PEOPLE the man was arrested about 15 minutes after he "unlawfully" entered the building and began throwing things off its terrace

New York City police arrested a Florida man last Friday after he was seen throwing pieces of furniture off a high-rise building in Midtown, Manhattan.

A NYPD spokesperson tells PEOPLE that officers responded to a call shortly after 2 p.m. local time and took Jean Oliver, 33, into custody about 15 minutes after he began hurling pieces of furniture off 20th floor of the building at 555 Fifth Ave., near 46th St.

"Once inside of the location, the male proceeded to make his way to the 20th floor outside terrace, where he proceeded to threw numerous furniture items (tables, benches, chairs) down onto the sidewalk and street while pedestrians where passing by," the spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

A large crowd of bystanders had gathered on the street below to watch as Oliver continued to yell and throw things off the building. Other groups gathered in office buildings nearby to watch from across the street.

Oliver, who police say is from West Park, Fla., was charged with burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, and criminal trespassing.

Videos of the incident have circulated on social media in recent days.

In one video posted to the Citizen App from across the street, a shirtless man can be seen throwing chairs and tables off the high-rise building with the Empire State Building in the background.

At multiple points throughout the video, the man is seen continuing to throw pieces of furniture off the roof, putting his arms up in the air, screaming and waving to onlookers, and getting into arguments with bystanders yelling at him from several floors below.

“Oh my god!” one person could be heard in the background of the video, looking on as the man continued to throw heavy items off the roof.

Other onlookers discussed why it was taking police so long to respond to the incident and whether the shirtless man might possibly escape without getting caught.

“I don’t think he wants to get away,” one person responds to that idea, as the witnesses continue to observe the man.

Local PIX11 reported that police appeared to shut down part of the street while responding to the incident.

No one was injured from the falling debris, according to the New York Daily News.
