NICEVILLE — Northwest Florida State College President Devin Stephenson was awarded the title of president emeritus for his contributions to the university during his seven-and-a-half-year tenure.

Stephenson was selected in April as the next president at Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland, the state's newest four-year, public university. The school has a focus in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. He starts his new position July 7.

In a news release, NWFSC board of trustees Chair Lori Kelly praised Stephenson's contributions.

“Dr. Devin Stephenson has provided transformative leadership for College educational initiatives and enhanced the reputation of the College as an educational institution and as an active participant in both the Okaloosa and Walton County communities, enthusiastically supporting the work of faculty, staff, and the College’s community partners," Kelly stated. "We are forever grateful for his service.”

During Stephenson's tenure at the college, the Collegiate High School enrolled more than 500 students, the college secured more than $73 million in grant funding and the athletic programs won three national championships. He also oversaw the opening of the Aviation Center of Excellence and the completion of the Radier Village student housing initiative.
