Gainesville council to fill empty spots

Jun. 17—The Gainesville City Council is appointing a new member Tuesday, and will have to replace another soon.

The role of council member for Ward 2 will be filled by Dakota Nichols, a long-time Gainesville resident who is also the treasurer of Gainesville ISD's Education Foundation.

The position was previously filled by Brandon Eberhart, who is moving out of state. He joined the council in 2019, filling fill the seat vacated by former council member Steve Gordon.

Eberhart went on to be elected in his own right in 2021 by defeating Justin Thompson for that Ward 2 seat.

The council is also looking for someone to fill the role of council member of Ward 1 following the resignation of Keanna Franklin, who resigned due to professional conflicts. No replacement has been named yet.

Franklin took over as the council's as the representative for Ward 1 in May 2023.

Franklin's predecessor, Carolyn Hendricks, was recognized by colleagues at the time for her 20 years of service as well.

Also Tuesday, the council will make plans for a public hearing over the annexation of 40 acres of undeveloped property north of the Gainesville Intermediate school. The public hearing is to be held at the July 16 meeting.
