Gastonia business fire stops mid-day traffic on Franklin Boulevard

A business fire on East Franklin Boulevard completely shut down traffic just before 2 p.m. Thursday.

Gastonia Fire Chief Phil Welch said it took the department roughly 30 minutes to extinguish the flames, and East Franklin was fully reopened with the exception of one eastbound lane.

The fire was caused by a propane leak that led to an explosion at the Gray Franklin Express Mart.

One Express Mart employee was injured in the explosion, sustaining minor burns, Welch said.

Delicias Catrachas Cinco Estrellas, a food truck frequently parked in the building’s parking lot, was not affected by the fire.

The Express Mart will likely be closed for the time being, he said.

Gastonia fire fighters extinguished a fire at the Gray Franklin Express Mart 1007 E. Franklin Blvd. just after 2 p.m. Thursday, June 20.
