A German holidaymaker has drowned during a boat trip off the Spanish island of Mallorca.

The 58-year-old man from Zossen, south of Berlin, was in Mallorca with his wife to visit his brother, reported the Mallorca Zeitung newspaper.

"He was suffering from a brain tumour and wanted to recover from all his operations," the man's brother told the newspaper.

The German consulate in Palma confirmed the death on enquiry, the newspaper said.

The accident took place on June 8, when a tourist boat set sail from Alcúdia in the north of the Mediterranean island with a total of 168 passengers on board.

The captain of the catamaran saw the man in the water but may have believed he was snorkelling, the newspaper reported citing eyewitnesses. However, when the man did not move for some time, he was pulled out of the water.

Local police confirmed that they have started an investigation into the case.
