Grand Junction Rotary Club presents Service Above Self Award

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Rotary Club bestowed a Special Service Above Self Award, shared by Jamie Hamilton and Jacquie Chappell-Reid, community members who dedicated years of work to our area.

Hamilton, a Grand Junction native known as Mr. Baseball, worked with JUCO for the past 40 years. While working for Colorado Mesa University, he donated his entire salary of $400,000 to scholarships, earning just a single dollar for tax purposes. Hamilton, who is also a Lion’s Club member, told WesternSlopeNow that, along with seeing how far the program has come over the years, there was something else that kept him at JUCO year after year.

Also honored was Jacquie Chappell-Reid, who helped raise tens of millions for HopeWest over 16 years. She is also the mind behind the storytelling statues around town. Jacquie wanted more than just the traditional bust to honor some of Grand Junction’s legends and had artists create statues that tell a story as well.

The Rotary Club also recognized its members who go above and beyond, naming Aki Fukai as Rotarian of the Year.
