‘The greatest reward’: Longtime educator selected as Grand Marshal of Grand Floral Parade

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — He’s led his school’s marching band along the route of the Grand Floral Parade in Portland dozens of times. But next month, he will be leading the whole thing.

The Portland Rose Festival has selected longtime band instructor Greg McKelvey as this year’s Grand Marshal of the parade. The Battle Ground educator is about to hang up his baton after 28 years in the district.

“Greg represents everything we love about the Rose Festival and Grand Floral Parade,” said Contesa Diaz-Nicolaidis, Rose Festival board president. “Greg has spent decades marching in our parades to showcase the hard work of his students. When times continue to get tougher for our young people, Greg always finds ways to make sure his students have a positive spotlight on them. We are so fortunate that Greg’s dedication to his students was matched in his dedication to sharing their talents with Portland and the world, for so many years.”

McKelvey has earned many honors throughout his career but says this is an incredible one to retire with.

“I’ve won a number of personal awards, but this has gotta be the greatest reward,” he said.

The Grand Floral Parade is Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m.
